Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer

Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer

Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer
Great Disposal--easy install
We had an 1/3 hp insinkerator badger and the grinding chamber actually cracked and split. So, off to shopping--came across this unit and wanted to try a different company's machine. The price was right for the size of the unit. I took this out of the box, reviewed the install and completed the project in less than 45 minutes. The unit looks great and fit perfectly where the badger was. Of interest, the 9980 comes with a 90 degree elbow out of the side of the machine to hook to the waste line. On a double sink, this wouldn't work. So I used the tail from the badger which was a straight pipe and discarded the elbow. The unit then fit right into place--picture perfect. It seems to me on the height and hookup, the measurements were exact to that of the insinkerator badger. So the hardest part of the install was removing the old unit which was seemingly extremely tight in place--that took the majority of the time. Of other interest, when you go to fit the collar to the unit,...

The Pit Bull of Disposers
This unit is about as powerful and solid as you'll find anywhere for residential applications. It replaces an old Kenmore 1/3 HP unit that was leaking. My little home was built in the 1930's (long before many of the modern conveniences we take for granted today), so I had some plumbing challenges to overcome - certainly no fault of the Waste King 9980. For the record, I paid about $107.00 shipped to my door.

I cannot add much to what others have written in praise of this appliance, so I'll just elaborate on my own experience. I decided to tackle this project around 11:30 PM after a long day at work, and *almost* conquered it before bed - spent about an hour getting the old unit off and preparing for the installation of the Waste King. If you have an older 3-bolt attachment holding your disposer to the bottom of the sink, this one should work for with a minimum of fuss. The directions are (mostly) clear and concise, written in plain English. Whatever you cannot glean from...

Probably better than "EZ Mount" for reason in review
I purchased the 1HP 9980. The "splash guard" contains a larger opening compared to the EZ Mount model. I know this because the 9980 comes with the removable EZ Mount model's splash guard which is useless for the 9980. I have no idea why they include it, but it's in the same plastic bag as a couple of other parts. I can put my hand through the 9980's splash guard, but not the EZ Mount one. It doesn't even fit in the sink opening for the 9980. I saw some complaints on the EZ mount model about the size of the opening which is why I mention this.

I replaced a 7.5 year old Badger 5. It is definitely quieter, but I first put some liquid dishwasher soap down the drain prior to running it. Some people have mentioned a noise issue, so you may want to try this idea.

Overall, the unit has been functioning great. No vibration of the sink like some have mentioned with the EZ mount model. I can definitely tell a significant improvement in the time it takes to grind...

InSinkErator Badger 5XP 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer

InSinkErator Badger 5XP 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer

InSinkErator Badger 5XP 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer
No better than the Badger 1/3 HP!
Last year I wrote a good review for my 12 year old Badger 1 unit that I was retiring after 12 years of faithful service. I decided to replace the old unit with another Badger and chose this 5XP model. I had such good luck with with the Badger 1 that I chose to stay with the Badger line, but just upgrade to the more powerful unit. Installation was a breeze as the units were the same size.

I've now had this unit for about one year and unfortunately it does not perform any better than the old unit, in fact it even makes more noise! I still cannot grind very much in it and it appears to be no more powerful than the old unit.

I was expecting a more powerful unit that could perhaps handle a little more bulk than the Badger 1. What I got was basically the same unit as the Badger 1, just a little louder now.

Leaks
I have a badger 5 and it developed a crack. I did some research and found lots of people with this problem. Stay away from this product

Rusted out in 6 months!
Do not purchase a disposer with a galvanized steel blade mechanism. 6 months old and it is completely rusted out! Garbage!

Dispose of chicken bones, fruit rinds, and other food matter with ease using the Badger 5XP household food waste disposer from InSinkErator. As the most advanced model in the company's Badger line of food waste disposers, the Badger 5XP has a powerful 3/4 horsepower induction motor and a galvanized steel construction for long-lasting durability. A compact design gives you extra space under your sink, while a twist-on Quick Lock sink mount enables easy installation. This product is covered by InSinkErator's three-year in-home service warranty.

Get Rid of Food Waste with Ease
Using the InSinkErator Badger 5XP food waste disposer, you can put chicken bones, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, and other food matter right into your kitchen sink. The machine virtually liquefies foods before they flow safely to your sewage system or septic tank. As a result, you can get rid of food waste without fuss while producing less bagged garbage.

Steel Construction and Powerful 3/4 Horsepower Motor
The Badger 5XP features a rugged galvanized steel construction along with a quiet yet heavy-duty 3/4 horsepower Dura-Drive induction motor. The disposer uses a one-stage grinding system and is designed to be hard-wired and controlled by a wall switch.

Quick Lock Sink Mount for Easy Installation
Like all InSinkErator food waste disposers, to simplify the installation process, the Badger 5XP sports a three-bolt Quick Lock sink mount made of stainless steel. If you have an existing food waste disposer, you can likely just twist it off and twist on the Badger 5XP. With Quick Lock, replacing one InSinkErator disposer with another is easy.

Economical and
Compared with other installed kitchen appliances, food waste disposers cost little to operate. InSinkErator Badger disposers use an average of just one gallon of water per person per day, or less than 1 percent of a typical household's total water consumption. They also use an average of three to four kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which typically amounts to less than 50 cents.

In addition, food waste disposers offer an alternative to simply sticking food waste in the garbage can. For those on a sewage system, grinding the waste with the disposer sends it to the local municipal wastewater treatment plant, where it can often processed into bio-solids for use as fertilizer or recycled to produce methane, a renewable source of energy.

Waste King L-2600 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposal

Waste King L-2600 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposal

Waste King L-2600 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposal
Quiet, strong and cheap, best warranty. Get it.
I bought this to replace 20 year old ISE disposer which lost both of its blades and was pretty much useless.

Installation was almost plug-and-play except for the sink flange piece. I had to remove old one (couple of minutes), clean some old plumber's putty and make sure contact surface is clean before I put the new one on. Since I have stainless steel sink, the supplied rubber gasket was just fine to use alone. The outlet orientation and dishwasher inlet were in exact same spot as the previous disposer so I didn't have to mock around with that - perfect compatibility.

Last was electrical hook up. The disposer comes with around 2-3 feet of cable with standard 3 prong plug on one end... I had to cut it off and make electrical connection to old cable. Manual covers that and tells exactly which prong should be hooked up to which color of wire on the other cable. Similarly to plumber's putty, there were no wire caps included with the disposer.

At this point...

Impressive product and customer support
Like several of the other reviewers, I purchased this to replace a Badger 5. I found the Waste King product impressive on a number of areas. The warranty is five years and it includes in-home service, which is a rarity nowadays. Some of the larger Waste King models (1 Hp) have a lifetime in-home warranty. I looked at them, but decided to go with the

3-bolt hardware versus EZ mount hardware = no problem...
Couldn't be happier with the purchase.
Here are some facts:

1. This unit replaced a Badger-1 disposal which had come with our house when we bought it new in 2004. I didn't even know what type we had until I took it out. We had been happy with the Badger but it eventually stopped working. Doing some research after-the-fact, I learn the Badger-1 only has a 1/3 hp motor and 1 year warranty. The Waste King L-8000 has a full 1 hp motor and a lifetime (non-transferable) warranty.

2. Though the Badger-1 only had 1/3 of the power of the L-8000, the Waste King was actually quieter. We didn't think either of them was loud, but the Waste King was even quieter.

3. There are basically two types of disposal mounts nowadays. If you have an existing disposal, the odds are nearly 100% that it's installed utilizing either a 3-bolt mount system or the EZ mount system. If you are planning to replace a disposal that required a 3-bolt mount system (such as the...

Quiet and fast. Has stopper that really works. Small bin makes accidents less likely, and I have not dropped any tableware in yet.
One thing that you must do. Before turning the lock ring in the final step of installation, don't forget to soap up the rubber gasket. If you don't, you will be sorry. It is not an option as implied by the instructions.

Grinds it up
I have been using this product for almost 6 months now and it is great. After installation, I have taken its flawless performance for granted. It was substantially larger than the small wimpy disposal that came with our house, but also surprisingly quieter; more like the guttural growl of a menacing bulldog than a loud but harmless chihuahua.

A couple of pieces of advice - make sure it will fit under your sink (it barely fit under mine), and create an outlet to plug it into instead of trying to directly wire it since it comes with a plug you would have to otherwise cut out.

Kitchen Aid KBDS100T 1 HP Cover Control Batch Feed Garbage Disposal

Warning
My disposal came with 4 wires hanging out of its wiring compartment.

1. Yellow-black with permanent cap on its end.
2. Stripped red wire.
3. Stripped black wire.
4. Stripped white wire.

After making numerous phone calls over a 2-week period to KitchenAid and the OEM who made it for them, it was decided to send out a service tech to my house. After 2 hours of wire tracing and phone calls, the tech determined that the OEM manufacturer should have twisted the red an yellow-black wires together, permanently capped them and tucked them away from consumer view.

This batch-feed model is very quiet compared to its 15 year old design that I'm replacing. Rather than use a mechanical on-off switch, this model uses a simple magnetic switch that goes click-click. One side of the stopper is for turning the unit on & off. The other side is for normal water drainage.

Very nice unit, but I should have gone to Lowe's and purchased the...

Great Features for Special Needs
Because of physical restrictions, we were looking for a replacement garbage disposal that could be controlled without reaching for a wall switch. This product has all the convenience, power and quietness features that can be crammed into one garbage disposer. The magnets that control the on-off switch are integrated in the cover which makes for effortless operation and absolutely prevents accidental insertion of hands or hardware during operation of the garbage disposal. Well worth the premium price.

Great Product
It's hard to believe that a new garbage disposal could make me so happy! It's everything that is advertised - quiet, efficient and, according to my husband, easy to install. My only quibble with the process is that I had to purchase it through a third party so my purchase wasn't eligible for free shipping.

In Sink Erator Badger 5 1/2 HP Food Waste Disposer

In Sink Erator Badger 5 1/2 HP Food Waste Disposer

In Sink Erator Badger 5 1/2 HP Food Waste Disposer
Junk! Lasted less than 2 years.
We purchased this disposal almost 2 years ago. I was replacing a lessor HP Badger that only lasted 4 years. I should have seen this coming. The disposal leaked out of the bottom of the unit, same as the previous one. The seal on the inside wears out quickly. The inside was nothing but rust and corrosion. I am replacing this one with a Waste King (lifetime warranty) due to the reviews compared to this brand. This only comes with a one-year warranty which it will probably fail shortly after.

A very poor disposal!!
We've had one for several years. I periodically have to take apart the entire plastic tubing system because it gets clogged very easily. It's a mess and not easy to put back together.
We are very careful, cutting up pieces before we put anything in it.
It once got stuck on a 'lemon rind'. Forget grape vines....(twice). Now we throw them away in the trash.

Beware.

So far, so good
This is a relatively quiet garbage disposal unit that I recently installed under a second food preparation sink. It is not my main disposal unit. I have learned long ago that disposal units do not like fibrous materials (don't use them for things like grape stems). They do not like being overloaded, and do not perform miracles. Things that should go in your trash (large bones, corn husks, large cauliflower stalks, etc.) should go in your trash. So we shall see. Disposal units do wear out and need periodic replacement. They do not last the life of the house. This is a low priced unit, and is relatively easy to mount (meaning easy to replace), so we shall see. It is a brand sold at Home Depot and other sources.

Waste King 1000 Eco Green Food Waste Disposer

Waste King 1000 Eco Green Food Waste Disposer

Waste King 1000 Eco Green Food Waste Disposer
Great for the money, easy install
I rated this 4 stars instead of 5, because based on the marketing they would have you believe this is a $200+ disposal you're getting for under $100. It's not. It's a well made (in China, of course) $100 class disposal. The motor case is plastic, and the mounting hardware a little thinner than it appears in the photo. Nonetheless, it's a good disposal for the price and works well. Installation was easy, it seems to do a much better job than my old unit in grinding up the waste into smaller particles and it's quieter than my old disposal, almost inaudible when the water is running.

Important note. It you have a standard stainless or cast iron sink you DO NOT need to purchase any of the Amazon recommended add-ons, as everything you need to mount the disposal and hook it up to your dishwasher (assuming that you have the dishwasher hooked up to you current disposal) is included in the box, except some plumber's putty. In my case I didn't need to use the discharge fitting...

2nd time's the charm.
First off, this is a great garbage disposal, I would rate the one I currently have installed a 5.
That being said, I originally ordered this disposal directly from Amazon and didn't fair to well.
When I opened the box the drain elbow was broken, so it was evident that the disposal could have been damaged in shipping.
I decided to hook it up anyway. Installation was easy, I didn't miss the fact that this model doesn't use EZ-mount.
I soon found out that when I drained a large amount of water, like a sink full from washing dishes, it would leak from the seam on the grind chamber. Returned to Amazon for a full refund, at that point Amazon didn't stock it anymore so I bought a replacement from Buy Plumbing. The replacement showed up in perfect condition and works great.

Pros:
-Smallest 1HP disposal I could find; I have very limited space under the sink so this is important.
-Quiet; really quiet, never heard another garbage disposal this quiet...

Goodbye Badger 1
Like many others, I found the glowing reviews on Amazon and Consumer Reports for the Waste King disposals irresistable. My Badger 1 had recently started acting up, so it was a great time to upgrade. At the time I purchased this Eco-1000 disposal, it only had one review on Amazon, but I reasoned that the lifetime in-home warranty made it a safe bet. NOTE: I purchased my Eco-1000 on Amazon from BuyPlumbing.net for under 90 dollars, including shipping. The listed price on Amazon jumped to $150 dollars the very next day. Lucky me!

When removing my existing Badger 1, I found that using a screwdriver through one of the "wing loops" for extra leverage was the only way to get it twisted off. Banging it with a hammer didn't help at all. Also, unlike most of the reviews that I have read, the plumbing under my sink was NOT a direct "plug and play" fit between the old disposal and the new Eco-1000. My Eco-1000's discharge hole was approximately 1.5" lower than my Badger 1. I...

Anaheim Manufacturing Company disposers grind food waste into smaller particles than the leading competitor's disposer. Smaller food particles biodegrade faster than larger particles, keeping cess-pools and drain pipes cleaner. Larger food particles tend to clog drain pipes faster than smaller particles. Most modern waste treatment facilities convert food scraps into fertilizer and soil conditioners, adding to the benefits of using a garbage disposer and helping to continue the recycling momentum. Anaheim Manufacturing disposers consume less energy to grind the same food waste as the leading competitor's disposers. Under normal operating conditions, the total energy consumption is less than a 60-watt light bulb. The efficiency of the Anaheim Manufacturing Company Permanent Magnet Motors compared to the leading competitor's Induction Motors allows you to cut grinding time, in turn saving both energy and water consumption. Being sensitive to the size of the carbon footprint we leave behind is something all of us need to be thinking about. Less energy is consumed to build a Permanent Magnet Motor by Anaheim Manufacturing Company than an Induction Motor by the leading competitor. Our well designed disposers use less energy and less water due to finer grinding processes.

  • Power cord included
  • Uses Less Water: Permanent magnet motor technology grinds food waste quickly, using less water than the leading competitor?s disposer.

Perfect!
This was the perfect replacement for the exact same model I had before. I have found that it is great for food, but I would not recommend it for cleaning heavy glass shot glasses! Replaced my old one myself in less than a half an hour. If you have a dishwasher, don't forget to knock out the plug on the side before attaching the drain hose... failure to do so requires another hour to clean up the mess, unhook everything, re-read the instructions (realize I'm an idiot), knock out plug, and re-attach. :D

great product, installed it myself in my apartment and it has done a flawless job since.

Kitchen Aid 250G
Disposer arrived on-time from online vendor. Agree with earlier reviewer that it should be shipped in an appropriate carton--not the retail shelf box even though there was no damage. Took me about 2 hours to install replacing a previous Badger 5 that was about 15 to 20 years old and leaking. Works fine thus far after about 1 month's use. Generally quiet and smooth. Reserve judgement to see how long it lasts. Obtained at reasonable price. Decided to avoid a new Badger 5 based on others' reviews. Couldn't see any indication where Kitchen Aid product was made--assume China. Only mild complaints are that the installation directions did not show exactly what the attachment ring looked like so was more difficult than necessary to figure out how to get it released on the model being replaced. Also, no new power cord provided or coupling where cord enters unit so had to use old pieces from Badger 5--seems they should provide these; and finally, to register the product one needs the...

InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer

InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer

InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer
Expensive, but still a good value
Our previous 3/4 hp In-Sink-Erator finally wore out after 20 years of service. We loved the cover-control on the old model, and I was shocked to find that it's such a rare feature. This high-end unit had it, and I wouldn't have been nearly as happy with wall-switch versions, which we've had in the past. The cover control means you never have to worry about you (or a guest) turning on the disposer when intending to turn on a light. No worries about using an electrical switch with wet hands. Kids are less likely to overload the unit by force-feeding, because the cover is in place when the unit is turned on.

I had never installed a sink disposer before, but I had installed our dishwasher and done similar tasks around the house. Instructions were clear, and I did the whole thing in a couple of hours replacing everything including the drain flange (included with the disposer).

This unit is whisper-quiet, and the 3/4 hp motor never breaks a sweat.

As I...

Buyer Beware if Your Sink is Cast Iron
I've had insinkerators in my last two homes. Very convenient. When mine broke down, I went with the new model which has a magnetic on/off switch. Seemed very advanced. Also great price on Amazon. Warranteed for 7 years in home. HOWEVER, after it was installed by the plumber, you couldn't get the thing to turn off. Called for service. They agreed to come but said if it isn't the device, they would charge $250 for a service call (as much as I paid for the insinkerator). Called back the plumber. He called service. Apparently, because my white sink is cast iron, it needs a different part to fit in the drain. Service knew the part number without looking it up. The part, which is an inch or so longer than the one that comes with the insinkerator, cost $75! That's one third the price of the whole shebang. Unfortunately I was too far down the road to turn back. Given the additional expense, the fancy magnetic switch and whisper quiet operation have lost some of their luster. At...

Expensive But Worth It
I'm impressed at the obvious build quality of the cover control model. It replaced an 18 year old Insinkerator cover control model that suddenly wouldn't turn off and became a shock hazard. This Evolution model snapped right into the old mount (real time-saver) and took about 2 hours to complete including minor plumbing changes. This is my 5th disposal install over the years and was the simplest. It's expensive, but cheaper at Amazon.com than some other online retailers I looked at.

Cover-Activated Control for Safe Operation
Unlike other food waste disposers operated with a wall switch, the Evolution Cover Control includes a cover that enables safe, covered operation and lets you turn the disposer on and off. With this Magnetic CoverStart Activation system, you just place food waste into the disposer, turn on the cold water, and place the cover into the sink opening where magnets--two in the cover and two on the disposer--align to activate the machine.

Cutting-Edge Grind Technology to Liquefy Foods
Along with a rugged steel construction and a powerful 3/4 horsepower motor, the Evolution Cover Control food waste disposer features a MultiGrind system that virtually liquefies food matter before it flows safely to your sewage system. This two-stage grind technology combines a GrindShear ring and a Tri-Action Lug system to finely grind foods and prevent clogs and jams. As a result, you can use the disposer to grind difficult food waste that you wouldn't normally put in a disposer, such as celery and potato peels.

Sound-Reducing Technology for Quiet Operation
Thanks to InSinkErator's SoundSeal Plus system and Quiet Collar sink baffle, the Evolution Cover Control is at least 60 percent quieter than typical food waste disposers--making it possible to hold a conversation, using normal voices, with the disposer running in the same room. This patented technology includes superior insulation around the motor, an anti-vibration sink mount, and an anti-vibration tailpipe to prevent sound transmission from vibrations. The patented sink baffle also helps prevent sound from escaping the throat of the disposer.

Quick Lock Sink Mount for Easy Installation
Like all InSinkErator food waste disposers, to simplify the installation process, the Evolution Cover Control sports a three-bolt Quick Lock sink mount made of stainless steel. If you have an existing food waste disposer, you can likely just twist it off and twist on the Evolution Cover Control. With Quick Lock, replacing one InSinkErator disposer with another is easy.

Economical and
Compared with other installed kitchen appliances, food waste disposers cost little to operate. InSinkErator Evolution disposers use an average of just one gallon of water per person per day, or less than 1 percent of a typical household's total water consumption.

Product Information
This product measures 14 by 11 by 14 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 22 pounds. It's designed to be hard-wired to your home's electrical system. With a grind chamber capacity of 40 ounces, the disposer can process a greater volume of food waste than standard disposers.

InSinkErator Evolution Essential 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer
Works great, takes lots of space
I recently purchased one of these and am pleased with the power, capacity, versatility, and especially the quiet operation. However, the installation was more than i had anticipated.

Assuming that you are replacing another disposer that is more than a few years old, you should be prepared to replace much of the surrounding hardware including the dishwasher anti-siphon valve, hose, and clamps. This disposer does not come with a power cord and the instructions direct you to use the one from your old unit. In fact, you will probably need to buy a new cord made specifically for the ISE, especially if your old disposer is another make; ISE's have a special strain-relief clamp which will prevent the cord from being yanked out. While you're under the sink you may as well check for leaks, replace the contact paper and patch any drywall knocks that have happened over the years.

The real gotcha with the Evolution Series is that it's wider than most other models, which...

Sooo quiet.
Replaced a Badger 1 with the Essential Evolution and am amazed at how quiet it is. There is absolutely no vibration while it was working. The chamber is so much larger than the old one. I like that you can remove the baffle to clean it and actually be able to clean inside the stainless steel chamber too. It is quite a bit wider than the old one but most of the difference in size is at the top so it doesn't take up extra usable space. At least not under my sink. My husband installed it and said it was easy to put in. The electric cord is not supplied so he used the one from the old (3-year) disposer. You may have to get a cord if you're not hard wiring the disposer. After one week of intense use, I think it's great.

Straightforward installation, good directions, runs smooth as butta
After reading some reviews and getting a deal on one, I installed this over a couple of hours last week with no major issues. I was a little concerned at first because it was so much bigger than the one it was replacing. Everything was detailed out very well in the directions that came with it. A+ for the directions. The only customization I had to do was trim down an existing piece of PVC pipe and refit it under my sink. Trust me, this part only took about 5 minutes to do. These are very easy and straightforward to install.

The InSinkErator itself works like a champ. It runs very quiet and smoot. Hardly know it's on at all. Definitely worth the investment and don't let the install scare you. The directions hold your hand right through it.

InSinkErator Badger 1, 1/3 HP Household Food Waste Disposer

InSinkErator Badger 1, 1/3 HP Household Food Waste Disposer
By Evolution model, not Badger
I too have one that leaked water through the casing. I can understand if it fails after awhile where the blades wear out or motor wears out but they shouldn't have a casing that opens up and leaks water in the under sink cabinet.

I've replaced this with a more expensive Evolution model. It costs more but I figure over a 10 year span, I'll have saved more money and frustration than buying Badger models over and over. Too many Badger reviews also say their casings leaked.

Great if you like leaks
I did not purchase this through Amazon, it came with the house I purchased a year and a half ago. After only 18 months, this garbage disposal has started leaking through the bottom of the housing. Not the sides, not the top... but the bottom through the reset button, screw threads and all other holes. If you've read anything online about garbage disposal repair, you'll see that this type of leak is the kiss of death. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this unit, you'll only be buying another one a year or two later.

Case Cracked, Blades Rusted
There must be some kind of systematic design flaw with this model.

I've owned two of these little monsters, and on both of them, the blades were covered in rust after about 5 years of gentle use. Is this what water and dish soap do to the moving parts in that amount of time? No wonder they won't warranty it for more than a year.

On the first unit, the blades just locked up -- I assumed due to the corrosion. On the second unit, the case developed a crack in its side, and water had leaked beneath my cabinet (which went unnoticed until black mold had ruined the cabinet base). The location of the crack doesn't appear to have been any kind of obvious stress point, so I am assuming it was created by interior rust and corrosion.

I have to wonder if the more expensive models have this problem as well, or is it just on this low-end model.

Advice: If you buy this model for the price, be sure to inspect it on a yearly basis for signs of its demise.

Waste King L-1001 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer

Waste King L-1001 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer
Helpful Hint
I am happy with the product. I was extremely happy with the customer service I got from Anaheim Manufacturing, the maker of Waste King ( [...] )when I had a small installation problem.

When installing the "cushion mount" it is extremely important that it be installed in the lowest possible position "the plastic of the "sink flange" should not be visible. Disposer is impossible to attach if wrong, a breeze if it is positioned properly. This is not clear in the instructions.

If used as a replacement disposer, be aware that the plumbing outlet may be at a different height than the original. I was lucky to have the parts available to make the change.

The outlet center on the 1001 model is approx. 6 1/2 inches below the sink bottom.

This disposer has no allen wrench fitting on the bottom to help fix jams, a wooden spoon is recommended.

Waste King
This disposer was an excellent choice for me. It is less than half the size of my old one so leaves more room under the sink for clutter. Note, however, that it does not hold a lot at one time but with continuous feed that is not a problem unless you have a huge family with a lot of garbage. I like it a lot & would recommend it.

Easy installation
This unit was easy to install for an average homeowner. It took about 1/2 hour to remove the old unit (the hardest part) and install the new. This thing works great and will grind up almost anything. I definitely recommend this disposer to anyone wanting a really high quality, easy to install, and high functioning piece of equipment.

Possible defect?
I installed my Badger 5 two years ago. I'm a single homeowner so it was used lightly. After grinding some onion scraps I noticed a leak under the sink. After careful inspection I noticed the disposal developed a crack in the housing unit. A quick call to InSinkErator revealed the unit was still under warrantee. I had a repair person out the following day who replaced the entire disposal with a Badger 5XP (he said they've stopped making the Badger 5). The problem was resolved quickly and to my satisfaction. My only concern with this unit is how or why it developed the crack with such light usage.

Good product for a reasonable price
We replaced our 10-year old disposer with the Badger 5. It was easy to install and works just fine. I don't know if there could be anything better on the more expensive ones. One thing to notice is that it does not come with a wired-in power cord. So you have to get a cord with a plug and connect it to the unit (I used the one from the old disposer). It is easy to do; just like wiring a light fixture in.

Poor quality
We have just had our 3 year old unit fail completely in the same way Paul did.

The plastic housing is cracking. Of course this is not something that can be fixed by replacing a washer or something simple.

When I phoned their customer service, I was told that as it was out of the 2 year warranty, they were not interested. While I can understand this for minor problems, it is pretty bad when the unit is completely worthless such a small time after installation.

Emerson products might have been good 20 years ago, but they sure aren't now.

Unless you like doing plumbing repairs, steer clear.
