InSinkErator Badger 5 1/2 HP Food Waste Disposer
Possible defect?
I installed my Badger 5 two years ago. I'm a single homeowner so it was used lightly. After grinding some onion scraps I noticed a leak under the sink. After careful inspection I noticed the disposal developed a crack in the housing unit. A quick call to InSinkErator revealed the unit was still under warrantee. I had a repair person out the following day who replaced the entire disposal with a Badger 5XP (he said they've stopped making the Badger 5). The problem was resolved quickly and to my satisfaction. My only concern with this unit is how or why it developed the crack with such light usage.
Good product for a reasonable price
We replaced our 10-year old disposer with the Badger 5. It was easy to install and works just fine. I don't know if there could be anything better on the more expensive ones. One thing to notice is that it does not come with a wired-in power cord. So you have to get a cord with a plug and connect it to the unit (I used the one from the old disposer). It is easy to do; just like wiring a light fixture in.
Poor quality
We have just had our 3 year old unit fail completely in the same way Paul did.
The plastic housing is cracking. Of course this is not something that can be fixed by replacing a washer or something simple.
When I phoned their customer service, I was told that as it was out of the 2 year warranty, they were not interested. While I can understand this for minor problems, it is pretty bad when the unit is completely worthless such a small time after installation.
Emerson products might have been good 20 years ago, but they sure aren't now.
Unless you like doing plumbing repairs, steer clear.
Dispose of chicken bones, fruit rinds, and other food matter with ease using the Badger 5 household food waste disposer from InSinkErator. As the midrange model in the company's Badger line of food waste disposers, the Badger 5 has a 1/2 horsepower induction motor and a galvanized steel construction for long-lasting durability. A compact design gives you extra space under your sink, while a twist-on Quick Lock sink mount enables easy installation. This product is covered by InSinkErator's two-year in-home service warranty.

Using the InSinkErator Badger 5 food waste disposer, you can put chicken bones, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, and other food matter right into your kitchen sink. The machine virtually liquefies foods before they flow safely to your sewage system or septic tank. As a result, you can get rid of food waste without fuss while producing less bagged garbage.
Sturdy Steel Construction and 1/2 Horsepower Motor
The Badger 5 features a rugged galvanized steel construction along with a quiet yet heavy-duty 1/2 horsepower Dura-Drive induction motor. The disposer uses a one-stage grinding system and is designed to be hard-wired and controlled by a wall switch.
Quick Lock Sink Mount for Easy Installation
Like all InSinkErator food waste disposers, to simplify the installation process, the Badger 5 sports a three-bolt Quick Lock sink mount made of stainless steel. If you have an existing food waste disposer, you can likely just twist it off and twist on the Badger 5. With Quick Lock, replacing one InSinkErator disposer with another is easy.
Economical and Environmentally Friendly
Compared with other installed kitchen appliances, food waste disposers cost little to operate. InSinkErator Badger disposers use an average of just one gallon of water per person per day, or less than 1 percent of a typical household's total water consumption. They also use an average of three to four kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which typically amounts to less than 50 cents.
In addition, food waste disposers offer an environmentally responsible alternative to simply sticking food waste in the garbage can. For those on a sewage system, grinding the waste with the disposer sends it to the local municipal wastewater treatment plant, where it can often processed into bio-solids for use as fertilizer or recycled to produce methane, a renewable source of energy.
